More About the Canaan Intentional Village
Where is it? Bradley's Crossing Road runs north from Route 295 just after 295 leaves East Chatham (that town/crossroads where you turn onto Albany Turnpike to head for Powell House from the Taconic). Here's a map from Mapquest. (Text directions) The road is well-maintained gravel, with very little traffic, and a small number of other houses.

What have we done so far? During 2000 and 2001 we and others renovated the newer of the two houses so that the Brauns could live there. We also put a lot of effort into cleaning up the land and getting some gardens going. We've planted fruit trees and grape vines, and harvested apples for cider. In 2003 we began rebuilding the old farmhouse (built circa 1795). We cut and raised a timber frame for it in the summer of 2003, with lots of help from friends and neighbors. Work continues on that building into 2007 (but it is mostly done and we have a certificate of occupancy). In 2005 we got approval for a subdivision of the land so current members can build their houses (as close together as the subdivision allows). In 2007 two member families began to build their houses. Members have five garden plots under cultivation, and have been joined on the land by sheep, chickens, pigs, and two horses.
What's the plan for the future? We want our member families to get on the land as soon as possible. We are excited about the building very energy- and water-efficient homes with numerous other environmental features like passive-solar design. We also look forward to regenerating more of the overgrown areas as pastures and gardens, with the help of our farm animals.
