How to Participate/Levels of Commitment
We welcome participation at various levels--you don't have to be planning
to join our "village" to be part of the Quaker Intentional Village
Project. If you're interested in the idea and want to keep in touch, consider
signing up for the QIVP newsletter, published electronically two to three times per year.
If you're interested in the Canaan QIV and want to help with the work of the community as we get started,
but are not sure about joining us as a resident, or know you can't join
us for a few years, the attender level might be right for you. And if
you feel that this is the right community for you and plan to join us
in Columbia County, learn about our membership process.
Below are the
three levels of commitment.
-
Prospective members: Prospective members are those who see
themselves becoming a part of the residential community in the relatively
near future. They are fully engaged in building a house on the land.
Prospective members are expected to participate in meetings regularly
and be involved in decision-making about site planning and housing
construction on the land in Canaan, New York. To attain prospective
status, members
initially contribute $1,000
for single-adult households and $1,500 for households with two or more
adults. In addition, there is an annual per-adult assessment to cover
ongoing costs (professional services, property taxes, land maintenance
and improvement, insurance). Prospective members also contribute $20
per year to QIVP for subscription to the project newsletter and other
communications. To buy into the project and select a house lot another
payment will be required, probably in the tens of thousands of dollars,
with a sliding scale of some sort. At this point, we are trying to
organize the economic side in a way that limited financial resources
do not preclude participation by interested families and individuals.

-
Attenders: Attenders are those who are not yet ready to be
prospective members, but who are otherwise very interested in QIV-C and in contributing their time and skills. Attenders are expected
to participate in meetings regularly (geographic proximity permitting)
and help make decisions. Attenders contribute a
minimum of $50 per year per household to QIV-C. This amount covers subscription
to the QIVP newsletter and other communications (currently $20
annually), with the remainder going toward expenses associated with
establishing and maintaining QIV-C.
-
Supporters: Supporters are those who are interested in QIVP but do not expect to become members of any specific member community. Supporters are those who are interested in the project. Supporters contribute a recommended minimum of $20 per year per household which helps cover communications and outreach.
To join at any level, contact Dee Duckworth at 518-758-8236 or e-mail
qiv-c@qivp
.org. To receive the QIVP newsletter electronically, e-mail info@qivp.org.
Meetings: Before attending a QIV-C business meeting for the first time,
please contact Dee Duckworth (518-758-8236) for the "catch-up" conversation
we've discovered people need to have before jumping in! We're sure you'll
have questions about what we've done so far and why, and it will be less
confusing for you and more efficient for us to answer them before you
attend a meeting. We also have a "catch-up packet" we can mail
to you that will fill in some of our history, directions, and previous
decisions.
